I am taking my son on a tour of UGA in a few weeks. On a typical Friday, how long will it take to drive from downtown Atlanta to the UGA campus if I leave mid-day? Thanks for the assistance.

Mid-day should be fine as long as your get out of Atl by 2.
It is still a solid 90 minutes from downtown if you get no I-85 traffic from Spaghetti Junction up to 316.

Depends on traffic getting to 316, and whether there is anything weird on 316. You could go 78, but I don't think it's worth it if you can leave early enough.
If you can leave before 2 or so, you shouldn't have a problem getting there in 90 minutes so long as there aren't any accidents, I would think.

I'd take 20 out to Social Circle and go that route.

Check traffic, and if I-85N looks bad, take US78.

Really just depends on how mid-day you're talking, but 90 minutes is a pretty good estimate.

Just FYI friday rush hour starts at like 2 in Atlanta. I would cut across 20 and up whatever road goes north to Athens from there. It won't be fun any which way you go, but 85 is known as one of the most congested areas especially if you dont leave before rush hour.

Never done that.
If I can't get an early flight come November, I may be looking for alternates myself.

Probably 99% of the time I've ever driven to Athens it's been via 78. Nice easy little drive.

Take 85 all the way. Don't get on 316 and then cut south through Jefferson

You dicks by snellville get all the perks
OP: I'd just take 85 to 316, expect traffic possibly AU spaghetti junction, jimmy carter/Indian trail and then one last time at 316 and 20. Expect 90 min, plan for 2 hours.
And tell your son welcome to the best decision of his life.

That's not a bad idea. Friday afternoon and 316 just skills out annoying.
Just understand that cops feast off of Jefferson hwy and keep it 8 over
