So a fake twitter account will get your home raided now.

The Twitter account was set up recently under the handle @Peoriamayor. It included a photo of Mayor Jim Ardis and tweets about sex and drugs.
Police Chief Steve Settingsgaard says officers were investigating it as a possible case of impersonating a public official.

PEORIA — Not long after learning about the parody Twitter account @Peoriamayor, the city’s real mayor, Jim Ardis, told police he wanted to find out who was publishing sometimes vulgar messages there, according to a search warrant filed Thursday.
The warrant, filed in Peoria County Circuit Court, details a two- to three-week process whereby Peoria police tracked down the location of the Internet address used for the account as well as the identity of the person who paid for the Web access.
Police were informed of the account by Ardis on March 12. The tweets implied “Mayor Ardis utilizes illegal drugs, associates with prostitutes and utilized offensive inappropriate language,” according to an affidavit filed for the warrant.
He reported it to the police and said he didn’t authorize anyone to “create the account using his personal photograph or information from his elected office.”
“Additionally, he wished to pursue the incident,” the affidavit said

Unfortunately, this sounds like some nonsense that the political leadership would order in my own municipality. On the upside, our CID Lieutenant (who checks every search and arrest warrant) is a lawyer and would tell them "I wouldn't do that shite if I were you."

Online impersonation is a crime in a lot of states. Something that is clearly parody would probably be ok but the closer you get to serious but fake content, the closer you get to meeting your new cell mate.

You'd think if it was a clear case of a crime, they would have arrested someone for it. I doubt that 50 tweets to 50 followers which included tweets such as "I am trill as frick" will convince a rational judge that it was anything but parody.
More likely, based on THIS ARTICLE, the police thought that the Twitter account was connected to one of their outspoken web critics and thought they might get a chance to teach him a lesson.

I don't have any idea if this one rose to the level of a crime. I was just pointing out that if you are planning on doing a parody, make sure it is clearly a parody.

As a political figure, something like this could possibly be seen as slander or even harassment. Not sure that parody would apply when identity is hidden and and there isn't an attempt to provide evidence that it is parody.
Hell, if they really pushed they might could even charge them with identity theft to a point. It would be like someone getting a fake ID with your name on it and go around saying they are you will doing stupid shite and saying stupid shite.

And if you're going to raid someone's house, you should be doing it for a crime. Not as a show of force for the mayor.
