Personally I think AJ is a great talent.. I was excited about him when he committed to us out of HS, and thought he had as much if not more raw potential than Brodie Croyle(who was a 5 Star out of HS)..

With that said, AJ has primarily been known as a game manager like many other Bama QB's. My question is do you guys think that is due to his talent level or is it more the system that Saban runs? CNS seems to run a relatively conservative style of play and has never really let his QB's win the game for us unless absolutely necessary(ie. BCS National Championship in 2011). This is not a knock on CNS, but I think AJ had the talent to put up video game type numbers under a different system..

So what do you guys think? Is it Saban's system or AJ's talent level?

Both.

1)Saban's system is play elite, top shelf defense and run the ball. Don't let the QB lose the game.
2)Bama has unquestionably had the most talent the last 5 years, almost laughably so.

AJ is just David Greene on a more stacked team.

He is more NFL ready that McElroy.

I think it was both. He had professional offensive line, which led to mostly play-action & screen passes/crossing routes. All starts with the OL.

I don't think he's a "great talent". He's easily better than our other QBs since Brodie, but that's not saying much. I wouldn't take him til the late 3rd or 4th round.

It's pretty easy standing in the pocket knowing you won't get hit.

Both.

McCarron has above average, but not elite, talent.

If he was on some pass happy team he could have put up big numbers like a lot of good college QBs could.

He isn't an elite NFL talent though. He is good enough to stay in the league a long time, but I don't expect him to be a top QB and might not even start regularly.

I agree.. I think he is head and shoulders more talented than GMac and I am glad that he was our QB.. With that said, the unselfish part of me wishes that he were in a different system so he could really show what he was capable of.. He seems to be a pretty god guy.. Plus is gf is super hot.. hahaha

Saban's system. AJ was really good and talented, but the wide receivers and running backs were better. So why not just get it into the hands of those guys? Game managers don't make mistakes and that's all you need out of a quarterback when everyone else on your offense was ranked in the top five at their position coming out of high school.

Ignoring his under pressure numbers and the fact that he did a great job of dodging pressure himself because his OLs were always overrated in pass pro?

When I think of AJ in the League, I think of Brady Quinn and Kyle Orton. He'll make a decent living at it for a while and retire fairly comfortably.

He will be a solid backup in the NFL. He clearly struggles under pressure, but when his all 5 star o-line was blocking he could go for 300+ easily.

Any of you think that if Andrew Luck was in Saban's system that he would have been as highly touted as he was?? NFL GM's and scouts were drooling over that guy..

A bit of both, but I do think AJ is a very good QB as well.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but I think he'd still put up good #s. Although, having a really good OL and running game at Bama helped big time (and I'm not knocking on AJ here).

NFL scouts drool over potential not college stats. Luck would have been a top 3 pick if he played at North Texas.

Don't compare AJ to luck. He isn't the same type of talent.

However it is fair to say that he's the most NFL ready QB since Luck IN TERMS OF intangibles such as leadership and football IQ.

Yes, maybe even more so. Stanford's system wasn't much different.

Luck has measurables that are elite.

Andrew Luck was in a very conservative system at Stanford. Also, he had less talent around him. He was just better... In every way.

You kind of unintentionally made a point against McCarron there.

Yes, because he is one of the most naturally gifted QBs to come out in years. Teh fact he played at stanford and not alabama has nothing to do with it.

There's a reason people from smaller schools get drafted in the 1st round despite not playing in big time colleges...because they're really really good.
