Why does college basketball bring the bench onto the floor during timeouts?

Curious. I've seen teams do this but didn't know if there was necessarily a reason why.

If I had to guess it would be to get away from fans so you could hear better.

Aren't the NBA benches farther from the seats than CBB?

Because Cal has the area around the visitors bench mic'd. He needs every advantage he can get, you know, can't coach and all.

I always thought it was for the media so they can get the minicam shots that play well on TV.
