With all the mess surrounding expansion, SEC scheduling being unbalanced and BSC undefeated teams, I have my personal "DREAM" solution to the whole thing.

-18 teams in 3 Divisions for Each

16 teams with two divisions of eight make interdivisional games the rarity and separate the conference too much. With 3 divisions of 6 you can concentrate regions, traditional rivals, and employ a 5-2-2 scheduling format. This way you play everyone in your conference home and home every 6 years. The conference will have to make a choice between aligning divisions to preserve permanent opponents or have wait for it.....
NO PERMANENT OPPONENTS!

- 12 game Schedule

9 conference games plus 3 non conference games from the other conferences. One from each conference. No FCS anymore.

- 8 team or 12 team CFB Playoff

8 team. Take the top two division winners for each conference championship game. 4 Conference Champs as a Final Four.

12 team. My personal favorite. Division winner with the highest conference record gets a BYE other two division winners playoff to play in the Conference champ game. The playoff between the Final Four.

Grant It, it will never happen. But I would love it.
