I work with some Seminole fans and we have spoken about the 98 title game on a few occasions. I honestly, for some reason, had never put 2 and 2 together that OSU had the same record as FSU going into bowl season. I was only 14 at the time, and was not following OSU as I was born and raised in Houston.

Was there a controversy as to who should play Tenn in the first NCG? Were Tenn. fans more worried about FSU or OSU?

I'd like to get some opinions since as I said I wasn't as "invested" then

Was there an FSU/OSU controversy? I just feel like there would have been a huge one if this happened in 2013, since FSU lost big in their road loss and OSU lost close at home (later in the year), and both teams steamrolled everyone else basically

UT barely made it past AU in the SECCG. Manning led a furious comeback and UT won by 1 point after AU initially went up 20-7 with D Craid going nuts.

Ok fair enough, but I think my point is the same. Both teams destroyed everyone on their schedules aside from 1 game each, with FSU losing by 17 on the road and OSU losing at home by 4

that was 97... he's talking about 98.

UT was lucky to beat us in 98, too... I think that's the last time they've beaten us, IIRC... anyway, we were a 3 win team with a lame duck coach... Jamal Lewis got hurt and Gabe Gross came in and near won us the game.

98 we beat MSU for the SECCG

To answer your question though, I think RebFeBrees pretty much hit the nail on the head

I thought UT snuck in with both K-State and UCLA lost in the final weekend?

There was some drama. Ohio St was #1 most of the season before they lost to Michigan St (hello Saban) in early November. Florida St lost very early in the year to NC St after Weinke threw 4 or 5 ints. They then had a HUGE win over Florida the last week of the season which propelled them into the position to get in the game if K St and UCLA (or TN)lost on Champ saturday.

TN fans I don't think cared about FSU or OSU..they are on pretty equal footing reputation wise and I think there may have been some hope for FSU since they played the second half of the season with their back up QB (The Rooster).

I remember being happy we weren't playing K St because I wanted to win the title against a name team like FSU or OSU.

The real worry for TN fans down the stretch was that Florida would beat FSU and backdoor their way into a rematch with TN. We had just ended a 5 year losing streak that year to them at home in a crazy OT game and we would have likely lost the rematch IMO.

Sorry for the long post.

GO Vols hope Butch can get us back to competing for the SEC soon.

So there was really no controversy in FSU getting in? People on talk shows weren't campaigning for OSU over FSU etc?

Thanks; it is interesting to me

Ohio State was 4th in the final BCS poll, so they weren't really that close to getting in. They were behind FSU ever since they lost their game.

Your loss was pretty late, I think.

That's my buddy in the Sparty cap above Billy Burke.

Back in 98 some pundits were saying it's better to lose 1 game earlier in the season than later in the season.

FSU also beat 5 ranked teams including #4 Florida in their final regular season game. BCS computers must have liked that win. OSU only beat 4 ranked teams.

Thanks guys; I was looking mainly at schedules and saw they were pretty similar with beating up on a lot of good teams.

Who was OSU behind in the BCS aside from FSU and Tenn.? UCLA or KSU?

Yea it was early November, but then they steamrolled Iowa and beat Michigan by 2 TDs, so I feel like that would make for a huge debate today

UT was #1 on BCS for quite a while. Both UCLA and K-State lost their final game and FSU snuck in at the last minute.
