Not done yet. Decision delayed - on their end. That said, he's actually considering this. I talked to an AU buddy tonight (like 2 minutes ago) and asked when they were gonna make a hire. He said he has a guess but can't say yet. I asked if I need to worry about replacing Kirby and he replied simply "Yes".

Again, not done but it is a VERY real possibility.

I'd be a little surprised but not shocked. Not worried about going against Kirby head-to-head, would just hate losing a good DC especially before the BCSNCG

Yeah, I'm literally not worried about this. He's not going to AU. If he does then fine, but we're not taking him back when Saban leaves.

I did take a look at the Auburn board and had to laugh about the mini-meltdown. I would think Kirby would be a good hire for them considering their situation (granted, not all of the posters were in meltdown).

Anyway, I've learned not to worry about message board rumors. If it happens, it happens.

Well, to be fair, I've heard nothing from the Bama side on this. The only perspective I'm getting is from the AU side. He's a real candidate in their minds with real possibilities of getting job.

In fact, I'm starting to get the feeling they are making (or being asked to) one last push elsewhere (or that the Petrino crowd is puttin up a fight). If they push is unsuccessful I think Kirby is the favorite. Wouldn't surprise me to see Gus as the compromise though.

I like Kirby a lot. I wouldn't want to lose him for a variety of reasons. He knows if he goes he won't get a call when Saban leaves. IF he gets offer and goes he wld be choosing to take the job instead of waiting on Bama.

He wouldn't get a call just because he left? What if he does well? Or are you just saying he would be burning all his bridges to Tuscaloosa if he took the Auburn job?

I really have a hard time believing he would take that job. It isn't a very good situation down there. They don't have a QB, or an O-line, or a D-line...or linebackers....or DBs....or WRs....and one decent RB. That's a 2 year rebuild at least.

They've got a pretty good DL actually, some of those young guys have potential, but I don't know if they have any guys for a Kirby Smart 3-4.

If they get Foster to stay that could be a start.

I'd say he's just a tiny notch above decent.

IF Kirby went there he'd need to find a DC that can work with him. I say Sal Sunseri would be a good hire, because people can knock him all they want for UT's D this year, but it was his first year and they didn't have the players for the job.

Smart would try like hell to grab Pruitt if he left, who will most likely be his replacement at Bama.

Pruitt would give him access to Mobile instantly, to go along with his ties to the GA area...

I told my father a few weeks ago that the only realistic home run hire that AU can make at this point will be Kirby Smart. It's the proverbial shot across the bow. Stealing one of our best coaches and recruiters is the best way to fight back imo, given the situation they are in. It's the ongoing Sabanization of college football and if our rival can't beat it, they might as well try to fight fire with fire and steal one of his disciples.

The one thing you have to take into consideration is the ongoing NCAA investigation. If for some reason it's bad, then the new HC will be a really shitty situation and will need a very favorable contract.

I'm thinking they still sell their souls for Petrino. However, if Kirby does go, he'll be taking a huge pay raise and going into a school that has talent. Not the worst situation in the world for him. I've felt we've got him for at least one more year, but I could be wrong. If he does go, best of luck to him, but for one game. He's done a fantastic job while here and I appreciate all the hard work he put in.

Insiders on both AU and UA boards are saying that this is probably going to happen. One guy said that AU agreed to give complete control and that Dye had to disassociate himself from the program and he would have to vacate his office in the AD. I really don't like this.

Putting the rivalry aside, taking a job at AU, at this point in time, would be a very bad decision. 0-8 in the SEC, ongoing NCAA investigation, recruits jumping ship, in the same state as Saban.

For comparison, does anyone know of other jobs that Kirby has interviewed for while at BAMA? I know he interviewed for Kentucky but thats the only one that I can really remember.

I feel that is Auburn hires Kirby Smart it will cement Alabama's Domination over the next decade. I Like Smart and want him at Alabama for selfish reasons, but believe me when I say this Kirby is nothing more than a play caller. He did not install the defense, Saban admires Kirby because of his knowledge of his defense. Kirby has never ran a program, hired an assistant, and plus he will have to deal with the fambly as we all know. I do not believe this hire would make him , but could give him experience for future coaching jobs.

Memphis, Southern Miss... He thought of going to Georgia as the DC... Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

There are certain Alabama fans who always thought Dye was a good coach because he was Bryant's right hand man. I don't think there are many left who still think that.

Thanks.

It just seems that there would be a better opportunity for Smart out there than an 0-8 SEC team, who is currently being investigated by the NCAA. Right now, AU is NO WHERE NEAR the opportunity that Muschamp had when UF opened up. Im not saying that AU is a bad job--Im saying that its bad timing.

I think Muschamp turned down Auburn, and I think it was a better job then than it is now.
