Do You Want Your Team To Stop Playing FCS & other Lower Tier Teams?

I heard Herbstriet say something to this effect on Finebaum the other day. He mentioned that with the playoffs coming, teams should be penalized for having such weak OOC opponents
Savanaha State is a 70 1/2 point underdog to FSU this weekend, the largest in CFB history? This is basically a glorified scrimmage.
Auburn plays La Monroe, New Mexico State, and Alabama A & M. Bama is playing Western Kentucky and everyone thinks it's a joke that their players actually think they can win. Why not limit it to lower teir teams in DI but not teams that should not be on the same field
What does the rant think?

To do that, you'd also have to penalize FBS teams for acting like a little bitch and refusing to play certain teams...thereby forcing them to schedule FCS or weaker opponents.

ideologically you want to say yes because it makes for a bad home schedule and you want bang for your buck when you get those season tickets in
in practice, though, the easy teams are needed to get through a full season with a chance at bigger prizes
necessary evil - the solution seems to be 1 big OOC game a year which a lot of teams have embraced

I enjoy games like these. Almost like another bye week.

I think most of us agree, but this happens because it is so hard to replace last minute changes. Florida State is playing Savannah because West Virginia changed conferences. It's going to be hard to put a policy in place that demands stronger schedules...maybe the selection committee idea will push teams to strengthen the schedules themselves.

I wouldn't penalize SEC schools, but I would penalize other conferences.

But if this is implemented accross the board, teams couldnt be penalized for not being undefeated because there would be more balanace.

Well, duh.
They are boring and add nothing to the season.
But it makes money for the team and helps to fill out the schedule.
I do appreciate when Skip Bertman tried to at least use in state schools. Win-win for the state and at least mildly more interesting than playing Towson or Idaho.
But in general, I really hate the rent a win games. Would rather have an 8 team playoff with no rent a win regular season games allowed.

I think those games serve their purpose. It lets the younger players get valuable game experience and it lets you rest some guys who might be a little banged up. Obviously a joke of a conference like the Big East ought to schedule some legit OOC games, but I have no problem with an SEC team scheduling 4 cupcakes.

well if the superconference ever actually happens that would be one of the added benefits - I don't know tho
schools like the for sure win and the little school likes the pay day

Yeah he wasn't saying this last year when jockeying for Alabama to get in. OK.St. had the harder schedule. :inb4youmadbro:

No. The conference schedule is tuff enough. SEC teams don't get to play teams like Minnesota, Duke, Indiana, and Kansas every week

Herbie's issue is that with the new playoff, the committee will look at the OOC opponents when they make their choices for the playoff teams. He thinks playing OOC teams that are sister's of the poor will impact the decisions made by the committee.

If the SEC stays with 8 conference games, then that might be a problem. People will throw the 'four cupcake' argument around come selection time.

I agree with this and appreciate Auburn playing Alabama A & M and Samford, however, this should be the exception and not the rule

I get this part. The rub is that this was one of the reasons the BCS formulas were made. So that opinions wouldn't decide who gets in the championship game. Seeing as how there is now going to be 4 teams selected it remedies it a bit. To me if it is not quantifiable it doesn't mean shite.

This is the article that made me consider this
It's an interview with the new Sun Belt Commissioner. In it, he states that:
If all of the lower tier DI team implement this, the Power Conference are going to either have to play each other or load up on DII opponents.

Benson instead would like to see Sun Belt members schedule non-conference opponents from similar conferences - like Conference USA and the Mountain West - to raise the profile of the league. Instead of sacrificing potential wins for a big pay day, the conference would be more likely to produce undefeated or one-loss teams. Western Kentucky has already adopted a philosophy of one single-game contract per year, and other schools could follow the Hilltoppers lead.

They are NOT D-II schools that most folks play...
It is
FBC
FCS (App state, Savanah State, Alabama A&M)
D-II would be North Alabama and god knows who else...
