3 protectors and wide splits on the line. Seen it all week and don't see the reason for it. Anyone coach who can explain this?

Better coverage lanes for the punt team. Also, the punter kicks the ball directly behind the "pocket" formed by the 3 shields.

Why not put 3 guys on the "guard" and have your fastest guy behind them. Let the 3 guys bull rush the personal protectors and let the fast guy block the punt. Easy to me. Going back to the old way is better imo.

Harder to cover ground if spread on defense, for a block. If you try to bunch everyone they'll run a form of swinging gate on you for 6

How is your fastest guy going to get there any faster than the 3 rushers? If he gets there any faster, he gets blocked, if he waits, then what's the point of using your fastest guy? Also, 3 guys in a shield can block more than 3 rushers long enough to get a punt off (because people take up space)

These guys are just used to take on blockers allowing the other guy to come unimpeded to the punter.

They can take on more than one blocker each long enough to get the punt off. When you rush all those guys, you're leaving yourself open for a big return.

Wouldn't that be a good thing?

Yeah, but the "fastest guy" can't get to the punter any faster than the other rushers can. It makes no difference if the "fast" rusher is fast or not, because there is no way for him to reach the punter until the blockers are engaged by the other rushers.

Furthermore, as I said earlier, the shield can block more than 3 people--the fourth rusher can't magically run through the shield just because three more bodies were added to it. He has to run around the shield, OR he has to be lucky enough for one of the blockers to get 'lured' out of the way by another rusher. If the blockers are disciplined, they'll prevent a rusher from reaching the punter.

I think he misspoke. If you sell out on the punt block, you let the other team's gunners go unblocked and you lose your opportunity for a return. You're basically guaranteeing no return in exchange for a slim chance of getting a big block.

Yeah that was dumb. The opposite is true, actually. It's hard for the receiving team to setup a return when everybody is trying to block the punt.

I have seen a few other teams have issues with it too. Lots of blocked punts. field goals. recently.

I can't believe this is the first time you've seen this, but a lot of people are doing it and that doesn't happen because it isn't successful.

The UVA punter screwed the 2nd block up last night because he didn't roll behind the shield for whatever reason.

FWIW, if it's done correctly it's almost impossible to block.
