Inherently selfish for what it's worth. Not sure if good or evil is the problem.

Correct.
Inherently selfish vs. inherently self-giving is the correct question.
The whole point of Love, God, and reality is to learn to let go and give. TO sacrifice. Marriage, Kids, Community. And most of all God. That's what will lead to "Good." That's why love, as defined by the Church is "willing the good of another."
