Isn't that a bit of a copout though?

Part of coaching is to make it to those games (which he did). Part of it is also to win those games (which he hasn't). If the teams he built weren't good enough to win those games, doesn't that count toward his evaluation?

Notre Dame not having enough talent to match up with opponents like Alabama, Clemson or OSU is in part due to his recruiting. UGA does have the talent to compete in games like that... mainly due to Kirby Smart's ability to recruit. That's a big part of being a college football coach.

Who knows?

I'm just saying he got bad draws most of the time.

Eli Drinkwitz beats Ohio State and their 4th string quarterback and gets a NY6 bowl win, we congratulate him.

Kirby faced Florida State's second team this year.

Oregon faced Liberty.

Then we say BK is a bad coach because he didn't beat three natty winners who went a combined 41-1.

5 of Kirby's 8 NY6 wins were in the playoffs, where the opponent had 1 or fewer losses and could have been a national champion had UGA lost instead of won.

In 2 of the other 3, UGA had more players sitting out than their opponent.

And in the one you pointed out, UGA didn't just win, they set a new record for the biggest bowl margin of victory ever, winning by 60 points. This surpassed the prior record which UGA set in the national championship game the year before winning by 58 points.

It kind of feels like a copout.

Now do past 4 playoff games for uga since you want to expand the sample size.
