The amount of times it actually happened IS overblown. Yes, snaps were an issue, but only one of MANY issues. But, we all love a hero, a champion, a Heisman contender. So, when our champion fails, we look for blame elsewhere. A scapegoat. That scapegoat might have had fewer deficiencies than our champion, but he's a faceless cog in the wheel and he did make some mistakes and they were of the type that even the simplest among us could see. And, most fortunate of all, that faceless cog left the team. The perfect scapegoat.
