Alabama Adds Richard Salhus to Coaching Staff

A proven recruiter, Salhus joins the Crimson Tide staff with 10 years of coaching experience

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Richard Salhus will join the Alabama coaching staff as an assistant swimming coach for the 2023-24 season, head coach Margo Geer announced Friday.

Salhus is a prominent recruiter in the field and brings with him over 10 years of coaching experience.

"I am excited for Rich, his wife Mary and his two sons, Liam and Oliver, to be a part of the Crimson Tide," Geer said. "Rich brings tremendous insight from his years of experience coaching at the collegiate and club levels, and great enthusiasm for developing student-athletes in all facets of life. Our team will benefit from Rich and all he brings both as a coach and as a person."

Salhus comes to Tuscaloosa after serving a year at LSU as an assistant coach. During his time with the Tigers, the women's team posted its highest NCAA finish in 30 years as both the men's and women's programs finished in the top 20 at nationals. From 2019-22, he coached at Army West Point as an assistant coach, helping the program boast 17 Patriot League champions.

Salhus began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater, Iowa, as an assistant coach and men's international recruiting coordinator from 2016-19. The Hawkeyes broke 30 school records over his three years and had over 120 changes to their all-time top-10 list. Additionally, Salhus coached with the Iowa Flyers Swim Club as an assistant coach for four years before being named head coach in 2016.

"I want to express my gratitude to head coach Margo Geer for the incredible opportunity to be a part of the Crimson Tide family," Salhus said. "It is an honor to join such a remarkable team while representing a university that provides all the necessary resources to pursue championships. I am excited to share the pool deck with an outstanding staff and build great relationships with our student-athletes to help and support them in seeking excellence. Roll Tide!"
